Plano, Frisco among top tech cities in the U.S.

by Emily Marek

Plano is one of the top cities in the country for tech professionals, according to a report from Cloudwards.

The tech website ranked the 100 most-populated cities in the country based on factors like IT salaries, cost of living, crime rate, fiber coverage, mobile internet speed, fixed broadband internet speed, tech job openings, university tech programs, tech companies and startups and tech events and conferences to see which cities are best suited for professionals in the tech industry.

Plano ranked as the fourth-best tech city in the country, bolstered by its rank as the No. 1 city nationwide for internet coverage and quality. The Dallas suburb also ranked second in the country for livability, offering a wide variety of available tech jobs, low crime rates and a relatively low cost of living compared to other tech hubs like New York; Washington, D.C.; and San Francisco (ranked Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively).

Furthermore, over 1,000 tech companies have set up shop in Plano, including McAffee, Odyssey Information Services and CompuCom Systems. As of January, there were 619 IT jobs advertised in the city, which equates to 213 open jobs per 100,000 residents.

Also in the top 10 was Frisco, which ranked first on Cloudwards’ list for overall livability thanks to its low tax rate, low crime rate and low cost of living. The city also has a huge proportion of tech industry workers — 12% of the city’s population works in tech — and is home to several large tech companies including IBM and Oracle, as well as 157 smaller tech companies.

Frisco and Plano also offer relatively high tech salaries — the average IT salary in Frisco is $95,516 annually, while the average in Plano is $95,733.

Several other Dallas-area cities made the top 30, including Arlington at No. 16, Garland at No. 21 and Fort Worth at No. 29.
