These small Texas cities are some of the best in the country

by Emily Marek

Nearly one-third of Americans say they’d prefer to live in the suburbs — but which small towns offer the best options for homeowners and buyers?

Wallethub ranked over 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 to determine the best small city in America this year. The financial analysis company created their ranking based on 45 metrics that measure affordability, education, health, quality of life and safety.

Two Texas cities ranked in the 97th percentile, meaning they’re among the top 3% of all small cities in the country. The highest-ranked was the Austin-area city of Leander, which ranked No. 2 for economic health, followed by the Dallas-area city of Allen.

Further down the list were the Austin-area cities of Cedar Park, which ranked in the 95th percentile, and Pflugerville, which ranked in the 89th percentile. The Dallas suburbs of Rockwall and Southlake — which was the city with the lowest overall housing costs, the third-highest proportion of homeowners and the fourth-highest proportion of high school educated residents — also ranked in the 89th percentile.

Little Elm, located just outside of Frisco, ranked in the 88th percentile, while nearby Flower Mound ranked in the 87th percentile. The highest-ranking Houston-area city on the list was Friendswood, which ranked in the 78th percentile.

On the flip side, several small Texas cities appeared at the bottom of Wallethub’s ranking. Fort Hood, Port Arthur and Big Spring all ranked in the 2nd percentile, with Nacogdoches and Del Rio ranking in the 3rd and 6th percentiles, respectively.
