Three Texas metros named top cities for “downtown living experience”

by Emily Marek

Dallas, Austin and Houston have been named three of the top cities in the country with the best downtown living experience.

StorageCafe’s 2023 list of Downtown Living Hotspots ranked 30 of the nation’s most populous cities based on cost of living, rental inventory, safety, shopping, culture, and more. Nearly half of the cities in the top 10 are in the South, with Dallas coming out on top as the city with the very best downtown living.

StorageCafe cited Dallas’ walkability and quantity of luxury apartment buildings as two of the reasons for the city’s downtown appeal. Dallas also has some of the most spacious apartments in the country, averaging nearly 1,000 square feet per person. Additionally, 95% of apartment units have access to workout centers.

Austin came in at No. 2 overall, ranking best in green apartment buildings and competing with Dallas for average square footage at 939 square feet per person. Austin also has 14.6 restaurants and 2.8 theaters per 1,000 locals, making it one of the liveliest cities to live in. StorageCafe also notes that Austin is one of the safest cities on their list.

Houston ranked slightly further down the list at No. 7 overall, boasting the best rent-to-income ratio on the list. While not as large as apartments in neabry Dallas and Austin, Houston apartments still offer some of the largest square-footages per person in the country at 890 square feet per person. Additionally, 75% of Houston’s downtown apartments are in luxury buildings and over 90% have access to workout centers.

Other cities in the top ten include Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Nashville, Columbus, San Diego and Phoenix.
